Oregon Trip - Astoria

On our way to Fort Stevens, our next campsite we stopped in at Astoria. It was a small town and we chose to go to the top of the hill and climb the Astoria Column.

This is the column from the outside. Inside are stairs that take you to the very top. Believe me there were a LOT of stairs. It took me quite a while to climb them but totally worth it when I got to the top.

See - this is the view from the top. Pretty cool, eh? You can see all around. It was a beautiful day. The other neat thing we did was to buy 2 little wooden planes from the visitor centre at the parking lot and when we got to the top of the tower we threw the little balsam wood planes and watched them float all the way down below us. Then some little kids were running around picking them up so we didn't have to worry about littering.

Look at the length of this bridge. We saw it from the Astoria Column and so upon Frank's persuasion we decided that we just HAD to cross it to get to the other side.

When we got over there we stopped for a picnic at this historic military site.
